Wiring Bathrooms

Bathroom electrical work raises some special considerations, beyond even those of the kitchen. Both have water around, but bathrooms are enclosed, usually smaller, and often put moisture into the entire air space of the bathroom. That makes wiring them for safety all the harder and more important.

Some electrical codes take these facts into account differently than others. But common sense and good wiring practice alone are enough to guide the do-it-yourselfer in this area.

Water Damage and Sealant

As too many homeowners know, water damage in the bathroom is something to be always on guard against. Tile, wood and other materials do an excellent job of keeping water from reaching the underfloor. But water will flow anywhere it can. Gaps in grout, cracks in tile or splits in wood, vinyl tears... water will find any opening that exists.

When that happens, several bad things happen gradually in parallel.

Tile Repair

Most tile will last generations. Some can last thousands of years. There are Roman baths that are still working and lined with the original material. But, sadly, tile sometimes does crack. Whether ceramic or stone, or modern composite, tiles can and do crack once in a while.

One major reason for this is faulty installation. If the underfloor isn't perfectly smooth and flat, not to mention sturdy, excess pressure is exerted on the tiles laid on top of it. Eventually, that pressure will cause a crack somewhere.

The Most Neglected Room

Bathrooms don't get enough attention from homeowners. For a space where we can easily spend over 15% of our waking time, the decor is often minimal. Sure, a rug gets thrown down. We might even take a lot of time to get just the right towels. But what about the bathroom itself?

Start at the bottom. Flooring is important for both utilitarian and decorative reasons. Clearly, a good tile will help keep water from the underfloor. When it's kept in good repair, of course. But how much effort went into evaluating ceramic versus stone, hardwood vs laminate? For most of us, probably not enough.

Shower Curtains and Rods

Bathrooms are utilitarian places. They serve a number of functions. But they can also be places of beauty. In fact, very few people are satisfied to just have a bare space that serves its purpose. They decorate. It's a primal urge.

Luckily for those who like to indulge that urge, there are hundreds of choices for shower curtains and rods.

These relatively simple items serve that dual goal mentioned above. They provide a function: to keep the water from the shower inside the shower and off the bathroom floor. But they are also a major contributor to the look of the whole bath.

Replacing a Bathroom Sink

There is a great variety of bathroom sink styles available today. Pedestal, wall mount, countertop and more provide options to fit any space and decorating scheme. Each has its unique installation details. We'll cover some general tips for just a couple here.

First, common to all installations: turn off the water and get a bucket and some towels to catch any remaining water. Open the valve to drain as much as possible. Now, onto the options...

Painting the Bathroom

Painting a bathroom brings with it special considerations. No other room in the house produces hot moist air in a small, enclosed space.

First and foremost, that affects the selection of paint. Water-resistant, temperature-durable high gloss is usually selected for a reason. It provides good coverage to ensure that the moisture stays on the bathroom interior side of the wall. Moisture that seeps through cracks or, worse, goes right through the wall will inevitably lead to mildew build up.

Maximizing Bathroom Space

Most bathrooms are much smaller than we would prefer. It's an odd choice on the part of homebuilders, considering that we spend about 15% or more of our waking time in them. But, they have to trim floor space somewhere, apparently.

That leaves homeowners with a problem, though: how to maximize the space. Fortunately, clever designers have given us lots of ways to do that.

A pedestal or wall-mounted sink is one good way.

Lighting the Bathroom

Light serves several goals in the bathroom. The utilitarian function is obvious. But that purpose can be served in numerous ways. At the same time, there are design issues that affect the feeling of spaciousness, atmosphere and other less immediately practical issues. A bathroom lighting design scheme deserves some careful thought to address all these aspects.

There are two main areas that are usually attacked first: whole-room illumination and highlights for the bathroom mirror. Both involve issues of task lighting. But there's a third that shouldn't be neglected: accent lighting.

Installing Vanities

Installing a new vanity isn't the easiest do-it-yourself project to undertake. But it is one of the most rewarding. At the end, you have a whole new area that is not only functional but livens up the bathroom decor.

Removing the old sink and cabinetry is the first step, of course. As always, turn off any water valves and open the faucet to get as much out of the pipes as possible before disconnecting the hoses and pipes.
